Welcome to the Illinois Welding School Monthly Newsletter

THE PIPELINE

 MEMO From The Manager

Debra has asked me to take over her little corner of the newsletter.  She has expressed her appreciation to me in writing the IWS newsletter and asked me to use this corner of the letter to fill you in on the news and views of the Illinois Welding School.

“Someone You Should Know”…
I am currently working as the Office Manager of IWS, but started in the first quarter of last year as an office cleaner and also a 4 hour-part time receptionist.  When Debra asked me if I knew how to write a letter, I giggled.  She had no idea that I retired from United Airlines’ Customer Relations Department as a letter writer for their customer concerns.  Since that day I have been handling the student’s files, attendance records, paperwork for the Workforce Offices, phone calls, appointments, photography, food planning, cooking and baking for our “Student of the Month” luncheons, and writing your very own  Newsletter, which I just renamed “The Pipeline”.

It has been a pleasure to be a part of this school and I truly care about the welfare of each and every one of you!  My heart is definitely in job placement assistance and I’ve been successful in acquiring various “Speakers of the Month” to help you in your job search.  I have introduced many companies to our school and my cold calls to employers have produced welding jobs for our graduates seeking employment.   We have been receiving call backs from employers who have hired from us before and have been impressed with our welders.  We are waiting for Bucyrus to call us back with 24 welding jobs in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  They are awaiting a big contract to go through soon!  I was informed that they may be willing to help with assistance in moving, too.  So, keep your eyes posted on the HOT JOBS board and have your resumes ready for me to fax over.  Sometimes the companies call without notice and we need your resumes on file.

Last but not least, please continue to keep up the good work!  You guys have been great despite this hot spell we’ve been going through.

Sincerely,
Sue Los, Office Manager

 IWS Romeoville

Welcome to our newest students who started their welding journey on July 12th–

Steven Schmidt - #103, David Ellis - #104 and Claudio Arguello - #104.  Good luck in your new welding career everyone.

Julio Castro joined us for a special class on tig with aluminum.  Our student, Raul Diaz, stepped forward and offered to interpret Julio’s needs on his phone call and at his appointment.  He went the extra mile and offered to help Julio with his translations while Bill is teaching him aluminum.  What teamwork, guys!

GRADUATION DAY!

Richard Luebke graduated from our Pipe Welding Specialist Course on July 9, 2010.
We wish you luck in your future endeavors, Rich!

  FUN FACTS (about welding)

***Which famous comedian has a large antique car and motorcycle collection and employs welders regularly? JAY LENO! His large collection includes models from the early 1900’s to modern vehicles.

***NASCAR- Long before the rubber hits the road, roughly 950 man-hours are spent on welding and fabrication for each race car. Hundreds of parts of hand-cut, welded and machined, from the chassis and suspension to the drivetrain.

***Welding in space was first attempted in 1969 by Russian cosmonauts. Today, advances in welding technology have made it essential for projects like the construction of the International Space Station.

LET’S GET COOKING!

We’re serving up burgers and sides compliments of David Oster’s parents this month. To celebrate our July Student of the Month, we’ll be firing up the IWS grill and enjoying some great angus burgers.

 SYNERGY

“Synergy, in general, may be defined as two or more agents working together to produce a result not obtainable by any of the agents independently.”

Synergy is happening among our staff and students. We are working as a team to produce results for IWS that no one person can do alone. Thanks to everyone for spreading the good work about IWS and for the teamwork and references you give to help other students enroll in IWS and get welding jobs.

“SPEAKER OF THE MONTH”

Our very own, Bill Gratzl, will be conducting our “Speaker of the Month” hour this month.  He is hosting a session on the fundamentals of aluminum welding and techniques.  Plan on meeting in the classroom at 10:30 a.m. for his presentation, then Bill will take you in the shop for a hands-on experience after his seminar.  Have your questions ready for your instructor!

FYI…

Larry Stonitsch, owner of Rovanco Piping Systems, has postponed his engagement with us until August. We will keep you posted on the exact date. Our student, Kyle Ulivi has been working at Rovanco and our former student, Eric Sharpe, has been called back to work there, too. Thanks to Eric for planting the seed at Rovanco so they are now looking to IWS for their welding professionals.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER?

Riddle of the month…

“The more you take, the more you leave behind.”

First person to see Sue (at her desk, please) with the correct answer wins a McDonald’s gift card.
